POEMS READ AT LOUDTHOTZ POETRY OPEN READING SEASON 8 EPISODE 7 THANKFUL
AJIJOLA HABEEB WINNER POEM OF THE MONTH |
TEDDY UGONNA - WORTHY OF MENTION POEM OF THE MONTH |
MY
NAME IS A POEM – (poem of the month)
My name is a poem
That single piece of word
Announcing my identity, personality
Ethnicity and nationality
All at once
My name is a poem
That resounding two syllable sound
Attached to everything I do
What I should do
And what I should become
My name is my poem
And I’ve always lived by my name
But life’s pace has gotten faster than I expected
It’s pull dragging me by the collar of my neck
Denying my lungs the fresh air that it needs
Like a paper origami on a flowing lake
On a raining day
Being pulled along by the river tides
Never having the freewill to go this way or that way
Like a paper origami on a flowing lake
On a rainy day
Hurried along by life’s pace
I’ve walked past my name and left my poem behind
Now sitting alone in this darkness
Putting on my regrets like a fully adorned royal regalia
Trying to remember what my name once sounded like
What the melodies of my poems once felt like
Trying to filter out my poem amidst these numerous voices
inside of my head
Biting off bits of my hearts, and
spitting out the chunks
Against the deafening echoes of this silent shadows
Like they were the rotten flesh of my decaying carcass
Sitting alone in this darkness now
Bottle in one hand, regret in the other
Picking up words like they were stones
To fling at the foot of God’s throne
Waiting for some door in a black cloud
To open up but nothing happened
Rain falls, night comes
And i'm still here, sitting alone in this darkness
enveloped in the shadows of what I once used to be
I used to be something good
I used to be words carefully wrapped with beautiful metaphors
I used to be imageries painting emotions anew
I used to be smiles on faces after a genuine I love you straight from the heart
I used to be answers
I used to be fresh ink painting away sorrows on the innocence of white pages
I used to be voices
I used to be echoes echoing off the voices of
Yeats, Shakespeare, and Dickinson
The words that grew wings and fly
I used to be the feelings engraved at the top of your heart
Maya Angelou , Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Frost
Raise your words, not your voice, It is the rain that grows flowers not thunder
Rumi, Li Bai, Homer
I used to be something meaningful,
Beautiful
But Like a paper origami on a flowing lake
On a raining day
Being pulled along by the river tides
Never having the freewill to go this way or that way
Like a paper origami on a flowing lake
On a rainy day
Hurried along by life’s pace

THANKFUL FOR BEING THANKFUL (worthy of mention)
I’m thankful for
the dawn's breath,
its smile refreshes my
docility,
I am thankful
for its warm nightingale
song,
I am thankful
for the choral medley
of the sun's orchestra,
I am thankful
I didn’t die
but live to die
one day at a time,
i am thankful,
for love,
its Judas hands found me
and i m thankful
I would not be denied
by a peter,
I am thankful
I am breathing
fresh lilies from untamed flowers,
I am thankful for this chance,
to spit on death's door,
and thankful I can sing epitaphs to its inane decrees,
I am thankful for my sunflower,
thankful,
I can rise each morning with her in my mind's cocoon,
a place of refuge for twain lovers,
I am thankful I can write ,
misery's a cruel master,
time is a wise student,
I am thankful, for a new swan song will birth,
from much heart bed,
and I am thankful to my muse,
for the profound imbuement to pen
this epistle of wan thank ful Ness,
for its better being thankful ,
than being a Jonah ,
sold by lesser devils to ocean depths,
I am thankful ,
for being thankful,
let the stars bear testimony,
I live to die ,
and die to mirth,
yet I am thankful
in all things Thankful, regardless.

GRATEFUL
HEART
In the
prison of this world
Yet freedom
to leap
Rat holes,
Lizard holes, Ant holes
Creations!
all have abode
The world
becomes a magical and amazing place through words of gratitude
Someone
somewhere is fighting to survive
Still my
heart beats
Even if my
hands are shaking and
I don’t know
what to write
Still my pen ink is ready
Still my pen ink is ready
Thankful for
the availability
Thankful for
all, I can always have more and I could also have less.
Grateful for
every breath
Even if the
sun is hot
The skin
still survives
Thankful for
the hard times, they had make me stronger
Silent
moments have become a joyful noise.
When you see
all the proofs that you are better than someone.
It gives you
goose bumps
It melts
your heart that you’ve not been grateful
Rewire your
brain to be happy
Tickle it,
when it’s not working well.
Egbon! You
can’t tell me there is nothing to be thankful for
There are
always one thousand and one things you should be grateful for
Life,
seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, centuries
Expect
nothing appreciate everything
Less
attitude more gratitude
Empty your
cup of pity and fill it with gratitude
As you waste
your breath complaining about life
Someone out
there is struggling to breath or has just taken his last breath
Even words
cannot express being thankful
Stumbling
across your strength, be thankful Thankful
brings happiness
Sing this
song with me.
Egbon! Be
full of thanks.

THE NEW DECALOGUE
It is true
that fresh air is good for the body,
And so in
this season of air scarcity
we are
especially grateful Mr. Minister
for the
monthly AIDS allocated to us
in order to
breathe freely.
Some do not
take this for a luxury
So I beg
these of you sir;
Terminate
the oxygen you use
In nursing
our ancestral potholes
They’ve
birthed living death traps
who are old
enough to swallow even degrees,
gotten from
the school of life.
In the new
constitution,
call your
religion its true name Sir,
the one
whose fragrance fanatically reeked on you
even as you
swore by the holy book
on your
revolutionary honor
push inky
thoughts out of our penciled mouths
brew a pot
of mutiny in our hungry minds
so when it’s
another thanksgiving without a turkey
we remember
not the sixth commandment
only the
need for some fresher air.

BE THANKFUL
Be thankful
that you don’t already have everything you desire.
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?
Be thankful when you don’t know something,
for it gives you the opportunity to learn.
Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.
Be thankful for your limitations,
because they give you opportunities for improvement.
Be thankful for each new challenge,
because it will build your strength and character.
Be thankful for your mistakes.
They will teach you valuable lessons.
Be thankful when you’re tired and weary,
because it means you’ve made a difference.
It’s easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who
are also thankful for the setbacks.
Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles,
and they can become your blessings.
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?
Be thankful when you don’t know something,
for it gives you the opportunity to learn.
Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.
Be thankful for your limitations,
because they give you opportunities for improvement.
Be thankful for each new challenge,
because it will build your strength and character.
Be thankful for your mistakes.
They will teach you valuable lessons.
Be thankful when you’re tired and weary,

A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who
are also thankful for the setbacks.

and they can become your blessings.

SURVIVORS AT SEA
When one is at sea
You never know what you'll see
You never can tell when
Or where your journey would end
But it's ok when you are sailing with a friend.
During turbulent storms
When life seems to shut all escape doors
Your friend is that companion
Who gives you a shoulder to cry on
Who wipes away your tears
Makes a mockery of your fears
Or may even succed in making you smile
The storm passes by after a while
When one is at sea
You never know what you'll see
You never can tell when
Or where your journey would end
But it's ok when you are sailing with a friend.
During turbulent storms
When life seems to shut all escape doors
Your friend is that companion
Who gives you a shoulder to cry on
Who wipes away your tears
Makes a mockery of your fears
Or may even succed in making you smile
The storm passes by after a while
You'll survive
On rainy days
When you can't seem to make hay
Or keep troubles at bay
And hope is but a shattered plate
Your friend is that mate
Who seems to change fate
Who throws you a lifeline
In past or future time
Till your worst worries are gone
Sometimes making you feel you had none
Staying till you see the sun
You'll survive
When the weather seems too hot
When Society seems like its gone nuts
When you feel stifled and tied up in knots
Guess what..
Just when life seems so unfair
Your friend will be there
To yab you till your brain is reset
Till you appreciate your present
Till you see the half full
For half empty is for fools
Yes! Your friend will yab you
Till you begin to give thanks too
Thanks for all life offers you
Then even the heat will feel cool
You'll survive
But the truth is this
There's something amiss
Something you didn't see
While journeying at sea
Every time you felt sore
And hid behind miserys door
Your friend needed you more
If you're happy your friend is happy too
But it can't always be about you
So open your eyes
Be a rainbow in the sky
No matter the weather
Know it'll get better
Be a thankful friend
A support till the end
Enjoy the sea
You've got terrific company
You'll survive

SEMPER GRATUS (ALWAYS
THANKFUL)
They
thought i was finished
But
i came back playing the phoenix
Dust
to dust they chanted
Ashes
to life I replied
I
have been around
And
I know life is a game
I
have seen quite a score and more
A
decade of enlightenment
Those
who can interpret my words
My
not believe the meaning
And
for that I am grateful
No
thankful Deo optimo maximo
I am
thankful to Gaia
As
she affects my world
For
enduring till the end
To
see I came out first
I
the first of the seventh anno Domini
A
gate keeper of the second half
I
have been around
I
have had my shares of life’s sweet bitterness
I
have survived beautiful conflicts
I am
not unscathed
But
my scars are testimonies
And
for that I am thankful
All
thanks to God.
But
the best thanks are yet to come
Deo
volente the world will sing my fame
And
remember me when they look to the stars

O GIVE
THANKS
O Give thanks to sand speeds
For fulfilling the soil to the brim
In the journey to survive the storm
Make way for the insect to win
Wake up from your lazy cushion
It is the best time to work it out
O give thanks to Acquilus
The father of unborn mermaids
Who was never an immortal being
Always swimming in the dead sea
Where sharks and whales have guts
To kill and devour any creature
O Give thanks to Agbalumo
For giving the bitter coin of life
And reviving us of the sweet sour
Always make our mouth to shock
Leaving a trace of varnishing line
Which was the birth storm of cane
O Give thanks to abductors
For making us feel unwanted
Restoring and reserving our integrity
In a clumsy lonely place
Which has no external exit
But extra demand for money
O Give thanks to mother nature
For the gift of everlasting promise
Providing and promoting our intelligence
In dispersed and scattered premises
Where there are true inhabitants
At reserved restricted area
O give thanks to the Woods
For providing and changing signals
Without saying a good bye.......
In a serene environment of lost
Having no guilt for ignorance
Left in the doom of backwardness

EARTH SOJOURNER!
I am an earth sojourner
Welded in its magical web
Washed, rinsed and dried
out by its scorching heat.
Welded in its magical web
Washed, rinsed and dried
out by its scorching heat.
Moulded in its knowledge
Built by its wisdom
Equipped with its truth
Positioned in its sphere
Wired to showcase His majesty
For these I am thankful.
Built by its wisdom
Equipped with its truth
Positioned in its sphere
Wired to showcase His majesty
For these I am thankful.

THANKFUL
Eyes
wide open, clueless...
The
rhythm of an heart beat
Lost
in the concept of time
Tick-tock...
Dum-dum...
Hands
frozen on the wheel
Legs
found grace to move
The
coffin of motion yelled...
NOoooo...!
A
managed left glide,
Kick-kick,
just go down (please)
This
is a winter of fear
Dum-....
Half
was the beat
The
noise was silent...
...Slowwww
A
muffled applause of glass
Crack-crack,
shatter...
Down
The
curtains dropped...
The
cast alive, thankful.

THANKFUL
Thankful for I gulp in nature’s fresh day
Hope is alive in every fiber yearning for survival
All to live die and…
Nothing is wrong in being right
Kindle hope for the unborn us
For every earth needs a moon
Unabashedly we are thankful
Loving every chance to wake up the good in us
Grateful for the wind that fans the embers of life
Ranting and depression kills me softly
All said in silence maybe worse than the loudest rant
To you my dear me, I will love till the end of time
Every thousand years within this second
Filled with the elixir of infinity
Urn life in time
Looking through the eyes of the sun
Thankful for the things I have but don’t value
Hear me my greedy self for I cannot have the world
All I need more than what I want is happiness
Not ill wealth, ill gotten by twisting and milking
Kindness is a healthy food for the soul
Forever ends in ever
Until then let us thankfully feast
Love will be our guide

THANKFUL
Our
tanks are full to overflowing
With
propane, butane and other named gases that make for movement, propulsion and
transportation
And
for that we are thankful
Or
to coin a word in a broken language given validity by our Supreme Court, we are
"tankful"
For
our bellies distended by foods, not kwashiorkor- inducing, we must of necessity
be thankful
As
what manner of hypocrisy is it that says Grace without meaning
Blessing
food that tastes like chaff in our mouth's
Saying
Grace over meals and dealing without Grace with our fellows
Raised
by my uncle
My
psyche razed
Burnt
out hollow till I had no face and was nearly phased out in "
Perelandra"
A
spaced out, space bunny without ballast or anchor for my soul
Layered
and textured with crater like wounds
Laser
like, radial pains
For
all these we are "thankful".
At
least there is family
Dysfunctional,
non functional but family
We
are thankful because we are
Because
we must
Because
thankfulness like mindfulness changes things
Things
change thankfulness
and
we are none the wiser
But
we must
Always!
Submitting
ourselves to the Blavatskian 'secret' or Gnostic knowing
But
to something anyway
In
the end zone, playing the endgame
Chanting
out our thankfulness
And
that is all there is!

ADULATIONS
Tell
those who have wings
That
those who crawl sing too
Tell
the penning pessimist
That
the hoping optimist
Say
there is still hope
Tell
the haves that the have-nots
Are
still thankful.
Tell
them at the top
That
them at the bottom
Still
leave our hand in the air longer
In
praise
Tell
the oppressor that the oppressed
Still
have air and they are not paying for it
And
so they are still thankful.
